1. Try a different cable and adapter
Cables fail far more often than phones. Look for fraying near the plug and try a second cable and wall adapter you know works. Cheap gas-station cables often charge slowly or not at all, and some trigger an "accessory may not be supported" message.
2. Clean lint out of the port
Pocket lint packs into the bottom of the port until the cable can no longer seat fully. Power the phone off and gently loosen the lint with a wooden toothpick or a soft dry brush. Never use metal pins or compressed air straight into the port. If you're unsure, we clean ports for free during a free diagnostic.
3. Force restart the iPhone
On iPhone 8 and newer, press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. A frozen charging process often starts again after a restart.
4. Check for "Charging On Hold"
If the phone is hot, iOS pauses charging above 80% until it cools down. In a Houston car or in direct sun this happens often. Move the phone somewhere cool, take off thick cases, and try again.
5. Look for a liquid warning
A "Liquid Detected" alert means the port is wet. Unplug, let it dry for a few hours, and don't override the warning. If it keeps appearing on a dry phone, the port may be corroded.
6. Update iOS
Occasionally a software bug affects charging. Go to Settings > General > Software Update while you still have some battery left.
7. Test wireless charging
If a MagSafe or Qi charger works but cables don't, the battery is fine and the port is almost certainly the problem.
Signs your charging port needs repair
- The cable feels loose or falls out easily
- It only charges at a certain angle or in one orientation
- Charging connects and disconnects repeatedly
- The phone isn't recognized by a computer
We replace iPhone charging ports from $74 on Lightning models and $84 on USB-C models. If the port tests fine but the phone still dies fast, the battery is the likely cause; see our iPhone battery replacement page.
